Jesus Asked, “Why Do You Call Me Lord?”

Sermon Notes

TODAY’S PASSAGE:

Luke 6:46-49 ESV… “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

THIS APPLIES TO ME TOO?

  • Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? Matthew 7:15-20

  • This above question becomes even more scary in its fuller context. Matthew 7:21-23

  • False assurance of salvation is a very serious issue in Jesus’ mind.

  • Why do you call me Lord, Lord and not do what I tell you? Luke 6:46-49

WHY DO YOU CALL ME LORD, LORD?

  • Even the question Jesus asks in our passage today doesn’t seem all that scary!

  • Dr. RC Sproul… “A person isn’t saved by their profession of faith but by being in possession of faith.”

  • Satan is the one who never wants a person to question the authenticity of their salvation.

  • Examining oneself can produce repentance unto salvation. 2 Corinthians 7:10

THE WISE BUILDER

  • The wise builder listens and obeys… Luke 6:47-48

  • The wise builder has to sift through a lot of worthless dirt to get to bedrock!

  • The bedrock (foundation) is Christ… 1 Peter 2:6; Hebrews 11:28

  • James talks about the dangers of having a profession of faith that doesn’t produce obedience… James 2:14-18

THE FOOLISH BUILDER

  • The foolish builder doesn’t obey Christ’s teachings… Luke 6:49

  • If you really love Jesus you will obey Jesus… John 14:15 & 21

  • When Christ comes in judgement, the ruin of the house will be great for non-believers… Luke 6:49; Matthew 13:24-30

  • We are called to examine our faith… 2 Corinthians 13:5

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

  1. Why is the question Jesus in Luke 6:46 asks so incredibly scary?

  2. What things might lead a person to have a “false assurance of salvation?

  3. What are some of the main differences between the wise and foolish builders?

  4. Have you ever taken the time to examine the genuineness of your faith?
